Welcome to 7th Grade Science at Coleman Jr. High. Go Chiefs!
My name is Miss Karen Bennett, and I will be your 7th science teacher this year. I'm very excited to be starting my 23rd year of teaching here at Coleman and we are going to have an amazing journey. So here is a little bit of information about me, I taught about 15 years in elementary, and taught all subjects in 3rd, 4th & 5th grade. I worked in WISD's curriculum department for about 6 years, then moved back into the classroom at the Jr. high level and have taught both 7th and 8th grade science. Science has always been a central focus in my life. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology and a double minor in Biology and Anthropology. I studied at Texas A&M in the Zoology program, but changed my major to Psychology because I wanted to focus on primate behavior. I worked in a Primate Research in Arizona for 2 years after graduating from college, and I also worked as a vet technician for 2 years after that. However, life always throws you some curveballs. Besides my love for animals, I have always loved working with kids. As a teenager I babysat, and worked in our church's nursery. As an adult, I was actually a nanny at one point in time. So I went back to school and became a certified teacher.
7th Grade Science is a compilation of various scientific disciplines including biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. The students will use the scientific method with laboratory exercises and collaborative learning activities to clarify and reinforce concepts taught through lecture and/or class participation activities. There will be a few projects this year in my room, so please help me encourage your child to complete them on time.
I know that the parent-teacher relationship is vital to your child's success in school. As your child’s teacher, I understand that you are allowing me to be responsible for your most precious gift and I realize that teaching your child is a privilege, as well as a tremendous responsibility. I will do my best this year to ensure that your student has a motivating and safe learning experience in the classroom. However, I cannot do this alone: I need your help! Science is a difficult subject and we need to be partners in the learning process. Please encourage your child at home by helping to ensure that they have completed their assignments, give them help with projects and studying, and make sure they come to school with a ‘can do’ attitude! Getting access to Skyward (Waxahachie ISD’s online administrative software) allows you to view your child’s progress daily! You can see absences and tardies as well as late and missing assignments. I will also be sending out Skyward reports periodically that are in addition to the progress reports you will receive from the campus.
By working together, we can help your child have a very fulfilling learning experience. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I check my email quite frequently so it is probably the best way to reach me. I will also be sending home a code to join my Bloomz classroom after Sept. 7th. Please at least have one parent or guardian sign up for your student. This is where I will communicate what is happening in our classroom, such as assignments, deadlines, event, testing, projects, classroom pictures and even videos.
