Waxahachie ISD invites community to free STEAM Expo

Family and friends are welcome to attend the third annual Waxahachie ISD STEAM Expo on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Waxahachie High School.

Students of all ages, along with their families, will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of STEAM-related challenges from 10 a.m.—2 p.m.

This elaborate, free event will include interactive STEAM exhibits, K-12 contests, the district science fair, hands-on STEAM challenges, make-and-take opportunities, real heart dissections, TECH Trucks, WHS CTE Bingo challenges, shows and demonstrations, food trucks and more.

All event competitions, Burleson’s Honey Bee an Inventor Competition, Sphero Create & Code Competition, WISD eighth-grade Egg Drop Competition, and the WISD Science Fair Competition, will take place in the Waxahachie High School cafeteria.  All competition winners will be announced at 1:45 p.m. in the cafeteria.


The Burleson’s Honey Bee an Inventor Competition will challenge students to create an invention that will help solve a real-world problem. Contestants will pitch the product to a group of Queen Bee judges. 

Burleson’s Honey donated awards for this contest - including Chromebook laptops for the first place winner at both the elementary and secondary levels. Those interested in competing in the contest should attend the pre-planning meeting on Jan. 17 at the WISD Curriculum and Instruction Office (behind Coleman) from 4:30—6:30 p.m. Contestants will receive more details and the competition rubric at that time. This will also be an ideal opportunity for individuals to start product planning.

There will also be a Sphero Create & Code Challenge, which is sponsored by Sphero Education. Teams of two or four will be required to follow the Engineering Design Process and then code a Sphero robot to move throughout the playing field. Awards for this contest are donated by Sphero Education. These awards will include Sphero Robots and coding mats. 

One participant from each team is encouraged to attend the informational meeting/team practice on Jan. 24 at the Curriculum and Instruction Office from 4:30—6:30 p.m. Students will be given a challenge and time to practice with the robots at the workshop to prepare for the competition time at the expo.


Expo participants will want to be sure to check out the state-of-the-art WHS Career and Technical Education wing on the west side of campus. This is the ideal opportunity to learn about the career clusters offered at the high school. All 15 cluster areas are offering booths at the expo: Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Career Cluster, Architecture and Construction Career Cluster, Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications Career Cluster, Business Management and Administration Career Cluster, Education and Training Career Cluster, Finance Career CLuster, Government and Public Administration Career Cluster, Health Science Career Cluster, Hospitality and Tourism Career Cluster, Human Services Career Cluster, Information Technology Career Cluster, Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster, Manufacturing Career Cluster, Marketing Career Cluster, STEM Career Cluster, Transportation, Distribution and Logistics Career Cluster. Students will receive a CTE Bingo card to use to guide them through the different CTE clusters to get them one step closer to winning a prize!


There will be approximately 130 free, interactive booths on campus with activities that correlate with STEAM education. These activities are suited for toddlers to age 99. The majority of local and national sponsors will offer hands-on activities, make-and-take projects, while about 10 percent of the exhibits are engaging and interactive demonstrations.  Thirteen WISD campuses will have booths at the event that are hosted by the school and student volunteers. Many student groups from elementary, middle and high school will also be represented with booths at the expo.

Booth activities include, but are not limited to, Pneumatic Rockets, Engineering on the Move, Nail String Art, Wood Burning Hearts, Chem Critters, DNA Extraction, Hachie Media, The Creature Teacher, Perot Museum, Bricks 4 Kidz, Build an Anemometer, Kaleidoscopes, Real Heart Dissections, Flippin’ Fishing Poles, Design a Cell Phone Stand, The Magic of Music Synthesis, Art Marbled Rainbows, Zipline Fliers, Salty Circuits, Homemade Ice Cream, Basketball Challenges, Bubble Painting, The Air Show, Vex Robotics, Foosball, Let It Glow, Kidz Science Safari, Planetarium Dome, and many more.

The WISD STEAM Expo gives parents an opportunity to learn alongside their children through experimentation, research, and creativity.

The WISD Bookmobile will offer a free book to each child and will be located in the east guest parking lot.

Local and national sponsors will host interactive booths with opportunities for families to explore, create and innovate.  These sponsor booths include: Sphero Education, Morgan Orthodontics, Sam Labs, John Houston Homes, Jacobs Engineering, Texas A&M SPARK Engineering, UT Southwestern, Photo Booths and Moore, The Madd Science Shop, Ward’s Science, STEMscopes, TalkSTEM, Panera Bread, Nicholas P. Sims Library, State Troopers, Waxahachie Fire Department, EarthX, Texas A&M College of Geosciences, Waxahachie STEM Gardens, Master Gardeners, Navarro College, Trinity Oaks Mortgage, Hand2Mind, and Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Food trucks will be located in the small parking lot on the east side of campus and will consist of Super Sliders, Doc’s Pork Roll, Yummy Pizza, Yummy BBQ, and Pokey O’s.

Also, Tacos 4 Life will have offerings for sale at the concession stand near the gymnasium.  There will be a snack station set up near the indoor practice facility, too.

By attending the STEM Expo, WISD students will receive a token to trade for a 100 daily math or science grade. Attendees will have the opportunity to win door prizes.

Guests are recommended to park in the east parking lot and enter through the Mike Turner Gymnasium or the west parking lot and enter through the CTE wing.
